Food on a stick is never a bad idea

Two things are happening at the moment:
1. I'm on a diet
2. It's summertime

Unfortunately, it's unlucky to have these events going on at the same time because summertime is when food tastes really really good, whether it's midnight milkshakes under the stars or $9 hot dogs at the ball game. Sure, fall has Thanksgiving, winter has holiday food, and spring has all those deviled eggs, but you really can't beat summer when it comes to overindulging.

And the number one place to indulge in the summer - fairs and carnivals. I love fair food. Corndogs, snowcones, cotton candy, funnel cakes. Basically if it's too hot, deep fried, and served on one of those paper plates that bends under the weight of a popsicle stick, I love it. I've been really good this year. So far, only one little old BBQed hot dog has entered my tummy and I didn't even have a bun, ketchup, or relish. Just me and a hot dog on a fork, dabbed in mustard.

...mmmm...hot dogs...

Anyway, I was thinking about our Ohio reception. I was trying to get Kyle to pick out a theme (or a menu...or any thing at all...) but Kyle's default answer to most things in life is "I don't know. What do you want to do?" For a while I thought he was putting me on, but it's occurred to me recently that he really doesn't want to make a decision. Ever. Which is sort of convenient because I would prefer to make all of the decisions for the entire world for the rest of my life, so...

Anyway, I was thinking about the reception menu. What about a whole carnival/fair theme with traditional fair foods and bright colors? I thought that might be kind of fun. You know, think mini-corndogs, fries, teeny funnel cakes, little sticks of cotton candy, fudge, soft pretzels with cheese, baked beans, baked potatoes, fried pickles, pulled pork...basically the whole 9 yards. Yes, it's not going to be Jenny Craig friendly, but I thought people might get more excited about that than they would about typical reception food. We're providing the food, so we have free reign.

Of course, that's a lot of fat. I want it to be fun, but I don't want to kill anyone by clogging their arteries. Plus, a summer-themed reception might seem out of place at the end of February. I really like the idea though, probably because it gives me a license to eat all those foods in one day. Probably the last image I want people to have of our reception are memories of the bride stuffing her face with meat on a stick. I might have to keep thinking...

It could be cute, though, right?

  1. LOVE it. Do you know how easy theming would be for that?? Tickets for invitations, favors could be bags of popcorn or even make them win their own favors by playing games, like throwing the the ping pong ball in the goldfish bowl. :)

Heck, you could even hold it in a field and have horse or hay rides or something. :)

    I WANNA COME!!

  2. Oh man, I hadn't even considered the games possibility. Ping pong balls and goldfish are brilliant! Maybe I could do a whole goldfish bowl centerpiece thing on the tables and then everyone can get ping pong balls with our wedding date and their name written on them. I mean, who doesn't love a ping pong ball? That's a good time right there!
